Can farming at household level overcome hunger in southern Africa? The Southern Africa Trust in partnership with the Institute for Democracy in Africa (IDASA) will host a public policy dialogue on food security in southern Africa, with a focus on how to achieve household level food security in the region. Many efforts to build food security in Africa give attention to the supply of staple foods at a country level, with little or no attention to food security for families at a household level – where hunger becomes a reality. Business leaders share experiences on inclusive business at the Bottom of the Pyramid The Southern Africa Trust will on 11 - 13 May 2011, host a workshop on new models of conducting business that deliberately target low income segments of society. Government listens to civil society on ways to tackle poverty The Presidency of South Africa, under the leadership of Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe, will convene a two-day consultation from 8 to 9 December 2009, at Willow Park Conference Centre in Kempton Park, Ekurhuleni, Johannesburg. The consultation aims to consolidate engagement with civil society organisations on strategies to end poverty. The Presidency has requested the Southern Africa Trust to facilitate the mobilisation of civil society to participate in this process and to gather input on the government's Anti-Poverty Strategy (APS).

Création de l'Association des Commerçants Transfrontaliers Informels pour faire entendre les voix des commerçants pauvres dans le développement des politiques en Afrique australe Les commerçants informels apportent une contribution majeure à la croissance des économies en Afrique australe. Le commerce informel est une source de revenus pour de nombreuses personnes - en particulier les femmes. Mais il reste souvent invisible dans les politiques nationales et les stratégies de développement régional, et les voix des commerçants informels sont rarement entendues dans les discussions sur le commerce régional en Afrique australe. Par conséquent l'intégration du commerce régional est souvent perçue comme n'étant pas pertinente pour les pauvres qui vivent en Afrique australe. Pour répondre à cette lacune, l'Association des Commerçants Transfrontaliers Informels a été créée lors d'une réunion générale tenue les 9 et 10 juillet 2009 à Victoria Falls, au Zimbabwe, avec le soutien du Southern African Trust.
