Urgent regional meeting on the human security impact of attacks on immigrants in South Africa.
The Southern Africa Trust, in collaboration with Mrs Graca Machel and the Foundation for Community Development will on 10 June, 2008 hold an urgent meeting in Maputo, Mozambique to address the regional impact of attacks on migrants from other countries in South Africa.
The meeting is expected to review the situation, define appropriate regional responses and agree on the practical action that can be undertaken by regional civil society organizations to address the situation.
According to Neville Gabriel, Executive Director for Southern Africa Trust, “while the situation of thousands of people leaving South Africa for neighboring countries raises immediate need for assistance to the displaced people, the full scope of regional implications of this situation are likely to become apparent in the months to come.” Gabriel is concerned that there is need to act quickly on the matter.
The meeting is expected to attract international relief and development agency directors, leaders in regional corporate social responsibility and heads of regional civil society organizations.
The Southern Africa Trust is an independent, regional, non-profit agency established to support deeper and wider engagement in policy dialogue to overcome poverty in southern Africa.
