Creating new opportunities...

Initiatives - Creating new opportunities for the voices of the poor to be heard in policy development

The key initiatives aim to create platforms for robust engagement by stakeholders; strengthen linkages between thematic based and constituency based civil society organisations; create and strengthen multi-stakeholder forums; and support official institutions to institutionalise practices that promote inclusion:

Poverty Observatories Support Poverty Observatories Support

The SADC Conference on Poverty and Development held in Mauritius in April 2008 decided on the establishment of a Regional Poverty Observatory (RPO). The RPO is seen as a multi-stakeholder consultative forum where all stakeholders working on poverty eradication at the regional and national levels meet to evaluate and monitor the implementation of poverty eradication programmes.

The Southern Africa Trust initiative contributes to the broader objective of creating and strengthening civil society platforms for multi-stakeholder dialogue on poverty and development at regional level and opening up policy spaces for civil society engagement. This initiative has two components: support to the institutional design and establishment of the RPO and capacity building of civil society readiness for participation in the regional poverty observatory and national observatories.”

The initiative also aims to open policy space for participation of civil society organisations in regional policy development processes through participation at a national level. It also provides a mechanism to link regional and national policy processes.

  Midrand Civil Society Support Facility

This initiative aims to support civil society organisations to engage the pan-African institutions based in Midrand, South Africa including the Pan African Parliament (PAP), the secretariat of the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD), and the secretariat of the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM).
