Initiatives - Knowing Civil Society Organisations and Building Capability to Do Pro-Poor Policy Work
The initiatives focus on strengthening civil society capability to influence policy development by contributing towards developing civil society organisations that are effective, inclusive, informed, active and resourced. The initiatives are action-oriented learning base on day-to-day work of the partner organisations. These include creating a platform/social network of civil society leadership to engage on regional development issues, share their challenges and to learn from best practice of leadership. The initiatives also include developing standing tools/resources for civil society and other stakeholders to navigate and understand the civil society sector in southern Africa.

Leadership for Change Programme
The leadership for change initiative intends to develop a non academic platform/social network of civil society leadership to engage on regional development issues, a platform to share their challenges and also learn from best practice of leadership. The programme aims to improve the effectiveness and strategic capacity of civil society leadership to influence the adoption of pro-poor policies and a regional agenda that will lead to poverty eradication.

Institutional Capacity Development for Targeted Regional Civil Society Organisations
Regional Civil society organisations have been facing challenges as a result of inadequate institutional support. Most of the apex organisations have had limited regional programme and profile. The Trust has intervened to support the apex organisation through identifying with them what are the needs and support required.

Mapping of Civil Society Architecture in Southern Africa
The mapping initiative intends to provide insight on how regional civil society organisations are organised in southern Africa and also an insight on how best to support the development of a regional framework around civil society. The initiative intends to give information on the size, nature, role and linkages of regional civil society organisation providing a better understanding of the detailed architecture thereof. The initiative’s objectives include refining the definition of 'regional' civil society and developing the information basis for a directory of regional civil society. The initiative will also map regional civil society organisation linkages and networks existing in southern Africa and to also determine the strengths and weakness being experienced by civil society.

Comparative Review of Legislative and Regulatory Environment in Southern Africa
The initiative aims to provide clarity and shared understanding on the commonalities and differences in regulatory frameworks for civil society organisations in SADC countries. The information derived from this initiative is for creating an enabling environment and recommendations will be developed for improved regulatory environment and civil society approaches to addressing civil society regulations in the region to influence countries to move to more effective frameworks.

Knowing Civil Society Organisations' Annual Report
The Trust produces an annual knowing civil society report which provides an overview of the activities of grant recipient organizations. The report provides the status of the level and quality of regional responses by civil society organizations, coalitions and alliances to poverty-related policy issues. The report also assess the degree to which organizations have continued to strengthen their pro-poor policy work and also strengthening national and regional networks for integrated policy responses.
