Citizens United for Renewable Energies and Sustainability
Citizens United for Renewable Energies and Sustainability is a network of NGOs and CBOs from around the world calling for programs to promote renewable energies. The network will host a Biofuels Capacity Building and Policy Workshop from 25 - 27 August 2008 in Maputo, Mozambique. The main aims of the workshop are to build capacity within civil society to engage in the biofuels and trade debates in the region; and develop policy positions on the same issues.

Free to be Concert: Celebrating Our Common Regional Identity

The attacks on migrants in South Africa in May 2008 have left a lot to be desired. The Southern Africa Trust, Southern African Development Community, MTN and Music is a Great Investment have embarked on a partnership to promote a common regional identity and express solidarity and hope in the context of the attacks. The partnership will culminate in a “Free to be” music concert on the 15th August 2008, 4pm to 6pm, at the WITS University Great Hall in Johannesburg, South Africa. The concert is free and open to the public and will be performed by a youth orchestra of musicians and some professional classical and jazz artists from several southern African countries. |

High level meeting on Africa's Development Needs
A high level meeting on Africa's Development needs will take place at the United Nations General Assembly in New York on 22 September 2008. The theme of the meeting is: "Africa's development needs: state of implementation of various commitments, challenges and the way forward".
It is expected that the meeting will be attended by civil society organisations, intergovernmental organisations, UN agencies, funds and programmes, regional development banks and the World Trade Organization, among others.
The meeting will conclude with the adoption of a Political Declaration.

28th Ordinary Summit
16 August 2008 marks the official opening of the 28th Ordinary summit of Heads of States and Government in the Southern African Development Community. The Summit acts as the supreme policy making institution of SADC and is responsible for the overall policy direction and the control function of the institution. Regional Strategies for Addressing the Global Food Crisis
The 2008 Food, Agriculture and Natural Resources Policy Analysis Network (FANRPAN) Regional Policy Dialogue and Annual General Meeting will take place from 2 – 5 September 2008 in Lilongwe, Malawi. The dialogue is themed “Regional Strategies for Addressing the Global Food Crisis”. It is aimed at celebrating Malawi’s recent successes as a food secure and grain exporting country and creating awareness among stakeholders on policies that help the region become food secure.

Public Panel Discussion
On 14 August 2008, the Southern Africa Trust will host a public panel discussion on the future of food security and access to affordable food for the poor in southern Africa. The main aims of the dialogue are to stimulate debate; promote a better understanding on the state of food security in the region; and explore practical ways of mitigating the impact of high food prices in the region.

The 4th SADC Regional Civil Society Forum
The 4th SADC Regional Civil Society Forum will take place from 13 to 15 August 2008 in Johannesburg, South Africa. This year's forum will discuss trade, action on the food price crisis, civil society participation in the SADC regional poverty observatory, governance and democracy.The forum will also consider how to strenthen and sustain partnerships among CSOs in the region and between CSOs and governments, with the aim of accelerating progress towards regional development. |

The SADC Employers' Group will
The SADC Employers' Group will, on 13 and 14 August 2008, host a regional private sector meeting in Johannesburg, South Africa. The meeting is expected to discuss the implementation of the outcomes of the Mauritius Poverty and Development Conference, foreign direct investment in the region, the regional business position that has been developed by the private sector on the SADC free trade area, and a possible business response to the changing situation in Zimbabwe.

The World Water Week in Stockholm is the leading annual global meeting place for capacity-building, partnership-building and follow-up on the implementation of international processes and programmes in water and development. The week is a forum for a range of agencies and actors who will design and implement strategies for more efficient and sustainable policies and processes. Southern African Development Community (SADC) Day
On 17 August 1992, the SADC Heads of States signed the SADC Treaty, giving the organisation a legal character. Since then, SADC Day has been celebrated on this day throughout the region. The SADC Member States are: Angola, Botswana, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe. |

2008 Southern African Broadcasting Association Annual General Meeting
The 16th Annual SABA General conference will take place from 17-20 August 2008 in Mauritius. This year’s conference is themed “Setting Standards for Public Service Broadcasting in southern Africa”. The conference is a forum joining decision makers from the public and commercial sectors; senior representatives of the broadcasting industry; and SABA partners from other regional and international organisations.

The Gender and Media South Africa
The Gender and Media South Africa (GEMSA) bi-annual general meeting will take place on 10 August 2008 at Kopanong Hotel in Johannesburg, South Africa. GEMSA is an umbrella organisation of individuals and institutions that work to promote gender equality in and through the media. The meeting is expected to, among other things, elect new office bearers for the Executive Committee.

XVII International AIDS Conference
The XVII International AIDS Conference will take place from 3- 8 August 2008 in Mexico City, Mexico. The theme for the conference is Universal Action Now and emphasizes the need for continued urgency in the worldwide response to HIV/AIDS and for action on the part of all stakeholders at the global, regional, national and local levels. The theme is a call to action reminding us that we can only reach the goals of ensuring universal access to HIV prevention, treatment and care through collective action.
